What you will be working on
The Citizen Disbursement Systems Department is responsible for the development, maintenance, and operation of systems facilitating governmental fund distribution to citizens through social transfer programmes such as Assurance Package, Silver Support, GST Voucher, and Workfare Income Supplement. As an Application Developer Intern, you will be part of an agile team building and enhancing cloud-native applications that support critical citizen services. You will gain hands-on experience in full-stack development, cloud technologies, automation, testing, and DevOps practices while working alongside experienced software engineers.
In this role, you will:
- Collaborate with software engineers, business analysts, testers, and infrastructure engineers to design, develop, and deliver digital solutions that support citizen-facing services.
- Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, solution design, development, testing, deployment, and operational support.
- Develop and enhance frontend and backend components of cloud-native applications using modern software development frameworks and technologies.
- Develop responsive and user-friendly web applications, ensuring a seamless digital experience for users.
- Build, maintain, and consume RESTful APIs and integration services that enable secure and reliable communication between systems.
- Develop and optimise database interactions to support business processes and application performance requirements.
- Gain hands-on experience in cloud application development and deployment using AWS cloud services.
- Work with containerisation and cloud technologies to support scalable, resilient, and secure application architectures.
- Participate in Agile software delivery practices, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives.
- Perform unit testing, integration testing, system testing, and automated testing to ensure the quality and reliability of applications.
- Support troubleshooting, defect analysis, root cause investigation, and implementation of fixes for application issues.
- Contribute to the design, implementation, and enhancement of CI/CD pipelines to improve development efficiency, deployment reliability, and software quality.
- Develop automation scripts, tools, and monitoring capabilities to improve operational efficiency and system observability.
- Apply software engineering best practices, including code reviews, secure coding principles, and application performance optimisation.
- Gain exposure to DevSecOps practices by incorporating security considerations throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Explore and recommend innovative approaches to improve application functionality, user experience, scalability, maintainability, and operational efficiency.
- Work with the team to deliver enhancements and new capabilities that support the evolving needs of citizen-facing digital services.

- Currently pursuing a Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Demonstrates a keen interest in software engineering, full-stack application development, and cloud technologies.
- Possesses programming knowledge and an understanding of software development principles, with exposure to object-oriented programming languages such as Java or Python being a plus.
- Familiarity with web application development technologies and frameworks, such as Spring Boot or Angular, is advantageous.
- Exposure to software testing concepts, including unit testing, integration testing, and test automation frameworks, is beneficial.
- Adapts well to changing requirements and embraces challenges with a positive and flexible mindset.
- Works well independently and with others, takes initiative without needing constant supervision.
Position is on a full-time internship basis from January 2027 to June 2027.
